Here you will find out all the steps to building your new concrete swimming pool with details of each step!
Excavation can be one of the most difficult and challenging parts to pool construction. Our pools are dug with a track loader and excavator. We grade the site, place forms, excavate, and hand carve every inch of the hole to ensure the proper amount of concrete will be placed everywhere. It's at this time we find out what the soil is like. If it contains excess roots, rock, trash, or soft soil conditions, then further excavation and other strengthening steps must be taken.
Unfortunately, this can mean more costs.
Luckily our owner has been excavating pools in Charlotte and surrounding areas for over 25 years and knows the soil conditions well for the different areas and even neighborhoods.
If challenging conditions arise, we know how to address them in the best and most affordable way, without compromising the strength and quality of the pool. You never know what you might find buried under the ground. (See Above: Old hand dug well we hit during dig)
Upon excavation we place 3inches of #67 gravel on entire floor of pool and spa. This not only allows for better soil stabilization and drainage, but also maintains our rebar stays clean until Shotcrete.
All of our pools are built with #3 rebar on 12" by 12" grid across walls and #4 rebar 6" x 12" grid on floors and tanning ledge. Any out of ground pool walls are built with double curtain of rebar. This far exceeds the standard for pool construction.
In this stage all the Plumbing that will be encased in the shotcrete is installed and pressure tested. (Skimmers, Returns, Vac line, Drains, Sheer descents, Spa jets, etc.) All light niches are installed, and Pool Bonding is done and inspected.
The big day! If the neighbors didn't know you were putting in a pool they will now. 😂 The guys show up before the sun. Start prepping everything. Then the concrete truck, then the loud concrete pump and compressor, the roads are filled with vehicles, the neighbors wonder what is going on, and then only a few hours later the big hole in the ground transforms into a concrete pool. It is an amazing process and one that you definitely should be home to see. All our pools are shot with 8" thick floors and walls and 11" thick beam and anywhere formed out of ground.
Once the Shotcrete is done the hydrating begins. The best way for Shotcrete to properly cure is hydration. The pool shell will be sprayed multiple times daily for at least 7 days.
At this stage your selection of Coping and Tile gets installed on top of the concrete (or as we call it Bond Beam). Any stone for walls or spas and trim tiles for steps, tanning ledges, and benches are also installed at this time.
At this time, you're finally recovering from the fact that your yard got all tore up during the excavation stage. Well now I show up with an excavator and tear it up some more. 🤦♂️🤦Ditches are dug around the pool and over to the pool equipment location. All piping is run to the equipment pad and put under pressure. All electrical conduit runs are installed as well. Everything gets inspected and all ditches are backfilled once inspection has passed.
Now it's time for your pool equipment to get installed and plumbed. Your pump, filter, heater (if applicable), salt chlorinator, valves, sensors, sub panel (if applicable), lights, and all wiring is installed. We plumb in all 2" sch 40 piping on most residential pools. We use a check valve between chlorinator and heater, plumb a heater bypass, and utilize unions for ease of any future service.
All areas around the pool must now be graded for deck, natural areas, and slope away from deck. All grading is done using a track loader and any areas with deck are compacted with a jumping jack tamp.
Now the equipotential bond gets installed and inspected. After inspection the deck gets formed, gravel placed, plate compacted, and #3 rebar installed. The concrete is then pumped in, placed, and broom finished. If using cobblestone or concrete pavers then a 5" crush gravel base and 1' sand base is placed, and pavers set. For Travertine a concrete sub-base is utilized.
Almost done now! The pool shell gets prepped by acid washing, pressure washing, and applying hydraulic cement around all fittings.
Once prepped the aggregate finish of your selection is applied. The next day it has a light acid wash to expose aggregate, depending on finish, and then hose filled or tanker truck filled at that time. We then begin the NPC new plaster care procedures daily and provide you with your complete pool care package and "pool care education"
